This is getting a little ridiculous. In case you haven't seen it, Rudy Gay is campaigning on YouTube for the Slam Dunk Contest, which is this Saturday night. He is requesting that the fans upload clips of their favorite dunks onto his YouTube profile, and he'll pick one to do for the contest. Here's the clip:
Now, I'm as much a fan of YouTube as anyone, but hasn't this gone a little too far? First we have players campaigning for All-Star game votes, and now, Rudy, who must lack any trace of creativity, is telling people to give him material for the contest. Then the fans can be part of the voting this year by texting in their votes. Isn't this a lot of time and effort both on Gay's part and on any fan's part for a dunk contest that is usually a tad overrated and, when it comes down to it, just an exhibition and something that's supposed to be for fun?
We're only a few years away from Kobe Bryant sitting on the bench during the All-Star game, asking fans to text him what he should do when he gets into the game: "Text 1 if you want me to dribble the entire shot clock out and then shoot a fade away three; text 2 if you want me to pass the ball and then glare at a teammate if they miss the shot; text 3 if you want me to try to draw a foul and then complain to the refs."
Remember, a vote for Rudy Gay is a vote for America.
